What is Icon pigmentation removal?

Palomar’s Icon Aesthetic System by Cynosure is a sophisticated piece of medical equipment using fractional lasers and intense pulsed light technology to perform non-invasive medical procedures, including the removal of excess pigment from the skin.  

Pigmentation removal is known as photorejuvenation. Photorejuvenation treatments improve skin texture and eliminate discoloration, resulting in an even skin tone. The skin treatment uses intense pulsed light, or IPL, to remove dark spots and stimulate the growth of new collagen.

How does Icon pigmentation removal work?

Icon pigmentation removal uses intense pulsed light, or IPL, therapy to remove excess pigment from your skin.

During IPL therapy, pulses of light flow through the surface of the outer layer of your skin and cause the deeper layers of skin to produce more collagen, which breaks down excess pigment and removes it from the skin’s surface.  

Dr. Bonnici typically applies a topical anesthetic to the treatment area before therapy and gives you protective goggles to protect your eyes from potential damage.

When Dr. Bonnici applies intense pulsed light to the area, you feel a sensation similar to being snapped with a rubber band. After your treatment is over, she may place a cold compress on the area to reduce pain and swelling. Icon pigmentation removal treatments can take 15-30 minutes.

Photorejuvenation treatments work best on patients who have pale, medium, or olive complexions. IPL isn’t recommended for people with dark skin tones because it targets and destroys melanin.

What can I expect after my Icon pigmentation removal treatment?

Within 2-3 weeks, your skin tone looks more even and has a more even texture.

The treated area may feel warm and be red and swollen for up to three days after treatment. The following week you may experience some bruising and mild blistering. Scabs may also form on the treated area.
